Why Golf Coaching With Data Changes Everything

The Problem With Traditional Coaching

You stand on a range. Your coach watches you hit balls. They say "try opening your stance" or "feel like you're swinging more to the right." You try it. Some shots feel better. Some don't. You leave with a vague sense of what to work on and no way to check if it's actually working.

That's how most golf coaching works. It's based on what the coach can see with their eyes and what you can feel in your hands. Both are unreliable. Your coach can't see club path to within a degree. You can't feel the difference between 2,400 and 2,800 RPM of backspin. But that difference is 15 yards on a 7-iron.

What Data-Led Coaching Looks Like

At 1IRON, coaching sessions run in The Bunker — a dedicated coaching bay with technology that doesn't exist in any other facility in the region.

TrackMan IO tracks the ball from impact to landing. Ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, carry distance, club path, face angle. Every shot produces 30+ data points. Your coach doesn't have to guess why the ball went left. TrackMan tells them the face was 2 degrees open with a 4-degree out-to-in path. That's specific enough to fix.

Swing Catalyst is a pair of force plates built into the floor. They measure how your weight shifts during the swing — ground reaction forces, pressure mapping, centre of pressure movement. Most swing faults start from the ground up. If your weight is moving in the wrong direction at impact, no amount of arm manipulation will fix the shot.

Zen Swing Stage is a moving floor. It tilts to simulate uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies. On a flat mat, every lie is perfect. On the course, they never are. The Zen Swing Stage bridges that gap.

Zen Green Stage does the same for putting. Variable slopes, variable speeds, variable breaks. Practice putting that actually resembles the putts you face on the course.

Five Coaches, Different Specialities

Not every golfer needs the same coach. 1IRON has five:

  • Chris Djuric — Director, TPI certified. Focuses on how the body moves and how that translates to the club.
  • Becky Brewerton — Former Ladies European Tour professional. Played at the highest level. Knows what it takes to compete.
  • James — Specialises in the mental game, motor learning, and practice design. Gets golfers out of their own way.
  • Alison — 30+ years PGA experience. Technical expertise across the full game.
  • Adam — Touring professional. Understands competitive golf from the inside.

Each coach uses the same technology. The approach varies based on what you need.

What Does a Session Actually Look Like?

You turn up. Your coach asks what you want to work on. You hit some shots while TrackMan collects data and Swing Catalyst maps your movement. Within 10 minutes, your coach has a clear picture of what's happening and why.

The rest of the session is targeted work. Not "hit 50 balls and hope." Specific changes, measured immediately. If you adjust your weight shift and your spin rate drops by 400 RPM, you know the change worked. If it doesn't, you try something else. No guessing.

You leave with numbers. You know what you were doing, what you changed, and what the result was. When you come back, the data is there to compare against.

Not Sure Where to Start?

If you don't know what you need, start with a Map Your Bag session. £45 (free for members). You hit every club in your bag on TrackMan and get your real carry distances. Most golfers find at least two clubs where their actual distance is 10+ yards different from what they thought.

From there, a coach can see where the biggest gains are and recommend the right next step.
